Autism

How Autism has effected our family

Hello my name is Deena. I have 3 boys and the youngest was diagnosed with pdd-nos, possible Asperger, or mild autism (depending on the doctor you choose to listen to!) He latest diagnosis is Asperger Syndrome.

We suspected at 18 months something was wrong. At 1 year he had over 20 words and understood most things we said to him, he started deteriorating soon after his one year appointment and by 18 month I was concered enough to ask my pediatrician if he may have Autsim, but since Jacob was so "cuddly", the doctor told me "no way", well I wanted to believe him so I did.

By Christmas he had just turned 2 and had regressed to 5 words, no eye contact, he would not interact with children (only occationally with my older boys), and he did not play pretend. (He also did alot of stimming, hopping mostly) By Feb we had a diagnosis from a neurologist and had started ECI, speech, ot and social therapy. By the end of Feb we had horseback-riding therapy added to that. He was at the verbal level of a 9 month old. He did cuddle and "love on" family members, but I nursed him for 21 months (when he wouldn't go any more) and did massage from birth, which I believe is the reason for it.

In April, Jacob was approved for Social Security and so we got a lab puppy to train for a service dog for him and she has allready been a great help (he loves her so much.) See a picture of her here.

By 4, his eye contact was back to normal, he would answer to his name about 70-80% of the time, he was up to 40-50 words and would imitate almost any word you say
. He finally potty trained day and night!!

I believe alot of prayer and great therapists are the reason for his amazing improvement. His ECI therapsist said they have never seen a autistic child improve so rapidly! I still get frustrated some times when I see "normal kids" and see how far we still have to go, but I am so happy with how far we've come!

At 6 years he has continues to improve. He talks up a storm and is almost back to his age for developement. I am homeschooling kindergarten and he is trying to learn to read. (We are not there yet.) He finally says and means, "I love you mommy" It melts my heart!
